Prayer for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, by St. Alphonsus Ligouri
My Lord Jesus Christ, for the love which Thou dost bear to men, Thou dost remain night and day in this Sacrament full of compassion and of love, awaiting, calling, and welcoming all who come to visit Thee. I believe that Thou art present in the Sacrament of the Altar: I adore Thee from the abyss of my nothingness, and I thank Thee for all the graces which Thou hast bestowed upon me and in particular for having given me Thyself in this Sacrament, for having given me Thy Holy Mother Mary for my advocate, and for having called me to visit Thee in this chapel. I now salute Thy most loving Heart: and this for three ends:

  1. In thanksgiving for this great gift;
  2. To make amends to Thee for all the outrages which Thou dost receive in this Sacrament from all Thine enemies;
  3. I intend by this visit to adore Thee in all the places on earth in which Thou are the least revered and the most abandoned.

My Jesus, I love Thee with all my heart. I grieve for having so many times offended Thine infinite goodness. I promise with Thy grace never more to offend Thee in the future.

Now, miserable and unworthy though I be, I consecrate myself to Thee without reserve; I give Thee my entire will, my affections, my desires, and all that I possess. From now on dispose of me and of all that I have as Thou dost please. All that I ask of Thee and desire is Thy holy love, final perseverance, and the perfect accomplishment of Thy will. I recommend to Thee the Holy Souls in Purgatory; but especially those who had the greatest devotion to the most Blessed Sacrament and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I also recommend to Thee all poor sinners.

My dearest Saviour, I unite all my affections with the affections of Thy most loving Heart; and I offer them, thus united, to Thine Eternal Father, and beseech Him in Thy Name to vouchsafe, for Thy love, to accept them. Amen.

Morning Salutation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

A Morning Offering to the Sacred Heart of JesusO sweetest Jesus, Divine Friend, Thou hast been watching and waiting patiently and lovingly in Thy lonely tabernacle all through the night for this moment, which finds me once more at Thy Blessed Feet, that I may be consoled and strengthened by Thy presence. I have come, dear Lord, to adore Thee in the Sacrament of Thy love, with a heart full of thanks to Thee for abiding with us ‘all days’. I thank Thee, in particular, for having protected and preserved me during the past night, and for having given me another day to labour for Thy greater honour and glory, for the good of my neighbour, and for my own sanctification and salvation. In reparation for all the sufferings Thy Sacred Heart endures in the Blessed Sacrament, I offer Thee the adoration and praise of all the just on earth, of all the Angels and Saints in Heaven, and especially of Thy Blessed Mother. I offer Thee my heart, my soul, my body, and all that I have. My whole being shall be consecrated to Thy service. Deign to make me obedient, modest, humble, patient, kind, and magnanimous in my conduct toward others; draw me to Thee in ever closer union with Thy loving, Sacred Heart; make me resigned to Thy Holy Will, and grant that I may be found worthy one day of that reward which Thou hast promised to those who love and serve Thee faithfully on earth. Give me Thy grace, that I may become a Saint. O stay with me, dearest Jesus, my good Lord and Master, till the evening of my life. Pardon me all my sins; I am very sorry that I have offended Thee, because Thou art infinitely good; I love Thee truly with my whole heart; let me not be separated from Thee, and when death comes, say to me: ‘Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord’. Amen.

O Sacrament most holy! O Sacrament divine!
All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine.

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque entered the Visitation Convent in 1671 and six years later Christ appeared to her in a vision in which “I could plainly see His Heart, pierced and bleeding, yet there were flames, too, coming from it and a crown of thorns around it. He told me to behold His heart which so loved humanity. Then He seemed to take my very heart from me and place it there in His heart. In return He gave me back part of His flaming heart.”

Pope Leo XIII approved the Litany of the Sacred Heart in 1899. The litany was developed and perfected from several earlier litanies composed since Fr. Jean Croiset, SJ, wrote The Devotion to the Sacred Heart and composed one of the first litanies in the 1680s and 90s. This litany is one of the six litanies of the Church approved for public use.

Act of Reparation Sacred Immaculate Heart, Precious BloodReparation for Insults to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Most glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, turn thine eyes in pity upon us, miserable sinners; we are sore afflicted by the many evils that surround us in this life, but especially do we feel our hearts break within us upon hearing the dreadful insults and blasphemies uttered against thee, O Virgin Immaculate. O how these impious sayings offend the infinite Majesty of God and of His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ! How they provoke His indignation and give us cause to fear the terrible effects of His vengeance! Would that the sacrifice of our lives might avail to put an end to such outrages and blasphemies; were it so, how gladly we should make it, for we desire, O most holy Mother, to love thee and to honor thee with all our hearts, since this is the will of God. And just because we love thee, we will do all that is in our power to make thee honored and loved by all men. In the meantime do thou, our merciful Mother, the supreme comforter of the afflicted, accept this our act of reparation which we offer thee for ourselves and for all our families, as well as for all who impiously blaspheme thee, not knowing what they say. Do thou obtain for them from Almighty God the grace of conversion, and thus render more manifest and more glorious thy kindness, thy power and thy great mercy. May they join with us in proclaiming thee blessed among women, the Immaculate Virgin and most compassionate Mother of God.

Hail Mary three times.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!

Reparation for Insults to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O blessed Virgin, Mother of God, look down in mercy from Heaven, where thou art enthroned as Queen, upon me, a miserable sinner, thine unworthy servant. Although I know full well my own unworthiness, yet in order to atone for the offenses that are done to thee by impious and blasphemous tongues, from the depths of my heart I praise and extol thee as the purest, the fairest, the holiest creature of all God’s handiwork. I bless thy holy Name, I praise thine exalted privilege of being truly Mother of God, ever Virgin, conceived without stain of sin, Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of All Graces for the human race. I bless the Eternal Father who chose thee in an especial way for His daughter; I bless the Word Incarnate who took upon Himself our nature in thy bosom and so made thee His Mother; I bless the Holy Spirit who took thee as His bride. All honor, praise and thanksgiving to the ever-blessed Trinity who predestined thee and loved thee so exceedingly from all eternity as to exalt thee above all creatures to the most sublime heights. O Virgin, holy and merciful, obtain for all who offend thee the grace of repentance, and graciously accept this poor act of homage from me thy servant, obtaining likewise for me from thy Divine Son the pardon and remission of all my sins. Amen.

Hail Mary three times.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!

An Act of Reparation for Blasphemies to the Holy Family

Most glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, Saint Joseph, her most Chaste Spouse, and Infant Jesus, turn thine eyes of pity upon us, miserable sinners; we are sore afflicted by the many evils that surround us in this life, but especially do we feel our hearts break within us upon hearing the dreadful insults and blasphemies uttered against Thee, O Virgin Immaculate and Queen of the Clergy, St. Joseph, ever chaste and patron of the Church and dearest Sweet Savior, O how these impious sayings offend the infinite Majesty of God and Thee, His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ! How they provoke His indignation and give us cause to fear the terrible effects of His vengeance! Would that the sacrifice of our lives might avail to put an end to such outrages and blasphemies; were it so, how gladly we should make it, for we desire, O most holy Mother, holy foster-father of Jesus and Divine Infant, to love Thee and to honor Thee with all our hearts, since this is the will of God. And just because we love Thee, we will do all that is in our power to make Thee honored and loved by all men. In the meantime do Thou, our merciful Holy Family, the supreme comforter of the afflicted, accept this our act of reparation which we offer Thee for ourselves and for all our families, as well as for all who impiously blaspheme Thee, not knowing what they say. Do Thou obtain for them from Almighty God the grace of conversion, and thus render more manifest and more glorious Thy kindness, Thy power and Thy great mercy and tenderness for sinners who cry out to Thee. May they join with us in proclaiming Thee blessed among women, the Immaculate Virgin and most compassionate Mother of God, thy Purity and Chastity, O Blessed St. Joseph, and Thy reign over men, O Lord, Jesus Christ, Our Savior and King!

Hail Mary (three times).

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!
Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons, pray for us!

A Prayer to be Saved from a Sudden and Unprovided Death

O most merciful Lord Jesus, by Thine agony and sweat of Blood, by Thy precious death, deliver us, we beseech Thee, from a sudden and unprovided death. O most kind Lord Jesus, by Thy most sharp and ignominious scourging and crowning with thorns, by Thy holy Cross and bitter Passion, by Thy loving-kindness, we humbly pray that Thou wouldst not suffer us to die unprovided with Thy holy Sacraments. O dearly beloved Lord Jesus, by all Thy labors and sorrows, by Thy Precious Blood and sacred Wounds, by those Thy last words on the Cross: “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” and those others: “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit,” we most earnestly beseech Thee to deliver us from a sudden death. Grant us, we pray, room for repentance; grant us a happy passing in Thy grace, that so we may be able to love Thee, praise Thee and bless Thee forever. Amen.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

An Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Sacred Heart of Jesus, animated with a desire to repair the outrages unceasingly offered to Thee, we prostrate before Thy throne of mercy, and in the name of all mankind, pledge our love and fidelity to Thee! The more Thy mysteries are blasphemed, the more firmly we shall believe them, O Sacred Heart of Jesus! The more impiety endeavors to extinguish our hopes of immortality, the more we shall trust in Thy Heart, sole hope of mankind! The more hearts resist Thy Divine attractions, the more we shall love Thee, O infinitely amiable heart of Jesus! The more unbelief attacks Thy Divinity, the more humbly and profoundly we shall adore It, O Divine Heart of Jesus! The more Thy holy laws are transgressed and ignored, the more we shall delight to observe them, O most holy Heart of Jesus! The more Thy Sacraments are despised and abandoned, the more frequently we shall receive them with love and reverence, O most liberal Heart of Jesus! The more the imitation of Thy virtues is neglected and forgotten, the more we shall endeavor to practice them, O Heart, model of every virtue! The more the devil labors to destroy souls, the more we shall be inflamed with desire to save them, O Heart of Jesus, zealous Lover of souls! The more sin and impurity destroy the image of God in man, the more we shall try by purity of life to be a living temple of the Holy Spirit, O Heart of Jesus! The more Thy Holy Church is despised, the more we shall endeavor to be her faithful children, O Sweet Heart of Jesus! The more Thy Vicar on earth is persecuted, the more we will honor him as the infallible head of Thy Holy Church, show our fidelity and pray for him, O kingly Heart of Jesus! O Sacred Heart, through Thy powerful grace, may we become Thy apostles in the midst of a corrupted world, and be Thy crown in the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

An Act of Consecration and Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

MOST Sacred Heart of Jesus! I adore Thee; I offer to Thee all that I am and all that I possess; I consecrate to Thee my soul with its faculties, my body with all its senses, my heart with all its affections; desiring in all things to honor, love, and glorify Thee; in thanksgiving for the numberless benefits that I have received from Thee, especially in the Holy Eucharist; in atonement for my own sins as well as in reparation for all the offenses that are committed against Thee in the Sacrament of Thy Love, and finally, in humble supplication, that I may henceforth be faithful to Thee, that I may please Thee in thought, word, and deed, that I may suffer in patience and in perfect resignation to Thy Holy Will, that I may become like to Thee in meekness and humility, that I may persevere in Thy love and in Thy grace to the end of my life, and that I may praise Thee and bless Thee with the Saints and Angels in eternity.

We beseech Thee, also good Jesus, by Thy Sacred Heart, overflowing with sweetness and mercy, to bless our Holy Father, the Pope, and our Holy Mother, the Church; to take under Thy special protection this parish, our homes, our country, our rulers, our legislators, our bishops, our priests, and all Religious Orders. We recommend to Thee all our concerns, our friends, relatives, benefactors, and all those who have asked us to pray for them; and those who are sick and those who are dying, and all who are under any affliction. Cast an eye of compassion on obstinate sinners and heretics and unbelievers.

Give eternal rest to the faithful departed.

Bless in particular the apostolic labors of those who are engaged in giving missions and retreats in propagating the faith in heathen lands, in spreading Thy kingdom on earth, and in fostering devotion to Thy most Sacred Heart and to the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

Act of Reparation to the Precious Blood

Adorable Jesus, Lamb without spot, Who ceasest not to pour forth Thy Divine Blood in order to appease the justice of Thy Heavenly Father; innocent and thrice holy Victim, who hast paid for the guilty a ransom infinite in merit and in sacrifice, I come before Thee to render thanksgiving for Thy benefits to us, and to make some poor amends for the crimes committed upon earth. Lord, how small, alas, are the number of those who do Thee honor, and how numerous, on the contrary, are they who despise and trample under foot Thy Precious Blood! How many daily satiate Thee with the opprobrium of Calvary!

O Jesus, by the potent voice of Thy Divine Blood, and in the name of the infinite merits of Thy heart-rending Passion, I implore Thy mercy, not for myself alone, but for the many souls who, resisting the call of grace, refuse to seek, at the foot of the Cross, or under the shadow of the Tabernacle, pardon and life. Pity, gentle Jesus, pity all these; pity also those who dare to approach Thee all uncleansed, and to mingle Thine adorable Blood with the mire of their sins. Yes, pity, mercy, pardon! We implore these graces in the name of Thy Blood and Thine Eucharist!

Most holy Mary, bless me! Take my heart, hold it fast, and keep it in perpetual adoration before the altar; that there it may ever be, glorifying Jesus, and making reparation for the outrages offered to His Blood.

Most Precious Blood of Jesus, have mercy on us!

Chaplet of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, by ChambersV. O God, come unto my assistance,
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, etc
R. As it was in the beginning, etc.

I. My most loving Jesus, when I consider Thy tender Heart and behold It full of mercy and tenderness toward sinners, my own heart is filled with joy and confidence that I shall be kindly welcomed by Thee. Alas, how many times have I sinned! But now, with Peter and with Magdalene, I weep for my sins and detest them because they offend Thee, who art infinite Goodness. Ah, mercifully grant me pardon for them all; and let me die, I ask it through Thy Sacred Heart, let me die rather than offend Thee again; at least let me live only to love Thee in return.

Our Father once and Glory be five times. Then say "Sweet Heart of my Jesus, Make me love Thee ever more and more".

II. My Jesus, I bless Thy most humble Heart, and I give Thee thanks that, in giving It to me to be my example, not only dost Thou urge me with strong pleadings to imitate It, but even at the cost of Thine own great humiliations, Thou dost point out and make plain to me the way of salvation. Fool and ingrate that I am, how far have I gone astray! Pardon me; no longer shall pride rule in me, but with a humble heart will I follow Thee through the midst of tribulations and thus obtain my peace and salvation. Do Thou give me strength and I will bless Thy Sacred Heart forever.

Our Father once and Glory be five times. Then say "Sweet Heart of my Jesus, Make me love Thee ever more and more".

III. My Jesus, I am filled with admiration at thee exceeding patience of Thy Sacred Heart, and I thank Thee for having given us so many wondrous examples of unwearied patience. It grieves me that these Thine examples vainly reproached me for my excessive delicacy, shrinking as I do from the slightest pain. O my dear Jesus, pour into my heart a fervent and abiding love of tribulations, of crosses, of mortification and penance, so that , by following Thy footsteps to Calvary, I may likewise come with Thee to the joys of paradise.

Our Father once and Glory be five times. Then say "Sweet Heart of my Jesus, Make me love Thee ever more and more".

IV. At the site of the great meekness of Thy Heart, dear Jesus, I shutter at my own, so unlike to Thine. Unhappily I am disquieted and complain even at a hint, a gesture, a word that thwarts me! Ah, pardon all my violence, and give me the grace hence forward to imitate in every contradiction Thine own unchanging meekness, thus to enjoy a perpetual and holy peace.

Our Father once and Glory be five times. Then say "Sweet Heart of my Jesus, Make me love Thee ever more and more".

V. Let all men sing the praises, Oh Jesus, of Thy most generous Heart, the Conqueror of death and hell, for well It merits every praise. I am more than ever ashamed when I behold my own heart so cowardly that it trembles at every idle word out of human respect; but it shall be so no longer; from Thee I implore strength so courageous, that after fighting and conquering on Earth, I may hereafter triumph joyfully with Thee in Heaven.

Our Father once and Glory be five times. Then say "Sweet Heart of my Jesus, Make me love Thee ever more and more".

Let us turn to Mary dedicating ourselves yet more and more to her, and filled with confidence in her maternal heart let us say to her:

Through the high worth of Thy most sweet Heart, obtain for me, O mighty Mother of God and my Mother, a true and lasting devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus thy Son; to thee end that I may take up my abode, with all my thoughts and affections, in that Sacred Heart, and may faithfully fulfill my every duty, and serve Jesus with a ready heart every day of my life, and especially this present day.

V. Heart of Jesus, burning with love for us,
R. Make our hearts to burn with love of Thee.

Let us Pray

May Thy Holy Spirit, we beseech Thee, O Lord, enkindle in us that fire which Our Lord Jesus Christ sent upon the earth from the innermost recesses of His Sacred Heart, and which He willed should burn with exceeding warmth: Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the same Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen

A traditional indulgence of 7 years. Partial indulgence now. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions for the daily recitation of this chaplet throughout one month (S.C. Ind., March 20, 1815; S.P. Ap., March 10, 1933).

Act of Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of JesusO sweetest Jesus, Thou dost pour forth Thy love abundantly on men, while they repay Thee most ungratefully with neglect, indifference and contempt. Behold us humbly kneeling before Thine altar (outside a church or Oratory say: in Thy presence); we would fain repair this heartless ingratitude on the part of men, and the manifold injuries that are everywhere done to Thy most loving Heart, by a special act of homage.

Yet we are not unmindful that we, too, have had our part in this unworthy behavior; therefore are we moved to deep contrition, and, above all we beg Thy mercy for ourselves; we are ready to atone, by this voluntary act of expiation, for the crimes which we ourselves have committed, as also for the sins of those who straying far from the way of salvation, either refuse, in the blindness of their unbelief, to follow Thee, the Shepherd and Guide of their souls, or who trample upon the vows of their Baptism and shake off the sweet yoke of Thy law.

Not only are we anxious to expiate all these deplorable crimes, but in an exceptional manner do we purpose to make reparation for these following: immodesty and shameful excesses in life and dress; the many snares of corruption laid for the souls of the innocent; the neglect of Holy Days; the hateful blasphemies that are hurled against Thee and Thy Saints; the reproaches uttered against Thy Vicar on earth and all the priestly order; the neglect also, of the very Sacrament of Thy love, as well as Its profanation by horrifying sacrilege; and finally the public sins of the nations in rebellion against the just rights and the teaching authority of the Church established by Thee.

Would that we were able to atone for all these outrages even to the shedding of our blood! Meanwhile, in order to atone for the violation of the honor due to Thee, we offer unto Thee that self saying satisfaction which of old Thou didst offer to the Father upon the holy Cross and which from day to day Thou dost continually renew upon the altars of Thy Church. To this we add expiatory merits of Thy Virgin Mother, of all Thy Saints and of the devout faithful upon earth. With all our hearts we promise to atone Thy grace assisting us, for our own past sins and those of all other men, as also for our coldness towards Thine exceeding great love, by a firm faith, spotless purity of life and a perfect fulfillment, so far as in us lies, of the law of the Gospel, and in particular of the precept of charity.

We likewise pledge ourselves in accordance with our strength to prevent such injuries from being done to Thee, and to invite as many as we can to follow Thee. Accept, we pray Thee, most gracious Jesus, through the intercession of Our Lady of Reparation, this our free-will offering of reparation, and be Thou pleased to keep us, by the great gift of final perseverance, faithful even unto death in our dutiful service of Thee, so that in the end we may all come to that our true native land, where Thou, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

An indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence once a month for the daily devout recitation of this prayer, on condition of confession, Communion and a visit to some church or public oratory.

The faithful, moreover, who, on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, assist at this same act of reparation, adding thereto the Litany of the Sacred Heart, in any church or oratory, even semi-public (for those who lawfully frequent it), in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament solemnly exposed, may gain:

An indulgence of 7 years; A plenary indulgence, provided that they atone for their sins in sacramental confession and partake of the Eucharistic Table (S.P. Ap., June 1, 1928 and March 18, 1932).

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, for in my negligence and contempt my sins have Crucified Thee once more, Thou Who art deserving of all my love. Desiring to regain purity of soul that I might receive Thee worthily in the Holy Mysteries, I beg Thy forgiveness and vow to sin no more.  I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to offer my penance, to pray daily, to examine my conscience regularly, to avoid the near occasions of sin, and to amend my life. Jesus, meek and humble of Heart, make my heart like unto Thine. Amen.

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thou didst reveal to the blessed Margaret Mary Thy desires to rule over Christian families; behold , in order to please Thee, we stand before Thee this day, to proclaim thy full sovereignty over our family. We desire henceforth to live Thy life, we desire that the virtues to which Thou has promised peace on earth, may flower in the bosom of our family; we desire to keep far from us the spirit of the world, which Thou hast condemned. Thou art King of our minds by the simplicity of our faith; Thou art King of our hearts by our love of Thee alone, with which our hearts are on fire and whose flame we shall keep alive by frequently receiving the Holy Eucharist. Be pleased, O Sacred Heart, to preside over our gathering together, to bless our spiritual and temporal affairs, to ward off all annoyance from us, to hallow our joys and comfort our sorrows. If any of us has ever been so unhappy as to fall into the misery of displeasing Thee, grant that he may remember, O Heart of Jesus, that Thou art full of goodness and mercy toward the repentant sinner. And when the hour of separation strikes and death enters our family circle, whether we go or whether we stay, we shall all bow humbly before Thine eternal decrees. This shall be our consolation, to remember that the day will come when our entire family, once more united in Heaven, shall be able to sing of Thy glory and Thy goodness forever. May the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph vouchsafe to offer Thee this our act of consecration, and to keep the memory thereof alive in us all the days of our lives. Glory to the Heart of Jesus, our King, and Our Father! Amen.
